In Time To The Music

In Time To The Music is the story of a piece of music, song, an air or melody travelling through time as a folk tune, a theatre melody, a hymn, a composition, a symphony – reinterpreted on three or more occasions, across months or centuries, through revival, musical revolution, social fashions or archeological discovery.

Each interpretation reveals fresh perspectives on the cultural and social preoccupations of each period the song appears. The programme re-creates how the tune would have sounded on the original instruments or voices when it was first performed and how that period informs the tune’s creation and style. We show how subsequent revivals are shaped and altered by each era and how each restoration – to the melody, song or group of notes – appears to reinforces its longevity.
